A few days ago I saw a friend from my study abroad program that I hadn't seen for ages. As we caught up on life, the conversation inevitably turned to my future. Graduation is marching steadily closer and my plans are as unsettled as ever. Instead of the panic of a few weeks ago, I am feeling more at peace about the current situation.

As my friend and I were talking, he pointed out some insights that I had not yet thought of. So often I am focused on the end goal--the five year plan or whatever other timeline I have put myself on. I become so wrapped up in the destination that maybe I miss out on the journey a little bit. As he talked about this concept, he explained that so much of who we become happens in the 'getting there' portion of the journey. The goal is important, but we are often a different person when we get there. Hard work and perseverance change our very nature; these qualities make us better than we were.

My friend encouraged me to look at where I want to be in five years and start working towards that goal. I know where I want to be and what I want my look like. As I align my daily practices and focus with my vision, I will begin to become the person that will be ready for whatever that vision is. Even if I don't 'achieve' that goal or my life doesn't look exactly how I want it, I will have developed those qualities and will be much closer to the person I want to be. This life is a process and it is such a blessing to be constantly moving forward and changing for the better.

I absolutely love this idea! I love to travel but I have so many places that I want to go. This would be a cool way to track where I've been!

I'm not sure what the tags say, but I think I would put the date I visited on it. Green tacks for places I've been and red for places I still want to travel to.

I am knee deep in researching Europe. Sometimes I wonder if this is a good idea. I find myself just wanting to read and read and read instead of study, study, study. It also increases my desire to go. I'm already counting down the days and it's still a ways off. But do I stop? Not a chance.

Lately I have been focusing my time researching Amsterdam. I have always loved how colorful this city is and cannot wait to see it (hopefully!) for myself. For some reason I feel like everyone should see Amsterdam by bike so that's the plan. You can rent a bike for a while day for five euros!

My list is still pretty short on things to do and see, but here's where it's at so far:

  • Anne Frank House
  • Vincent Van Gogh Museum
  • Canal walk/boat tour
  • Tassenmuseum (museum of handbags and purses)
  • Jodenbuurt (old Jewish quarter)
  • Bloemenmarkt (floating flower market)
  • Waterlooplein flea market (apparently European flea markets are to die for)

It's a pretty short list, but the trip will only be a few days! Anyone been? Any other tips?

Link love for Amsterdam:

Great blogs here, here, and here

Tons of ideas here.

All encompassing here.

This past weekend I stayed with my aunt and uncle for a much needed break. My aunt and I share a love for old movies. If it's in black and white, we're in. This weekend we watched a Gene Kelly classic: An American in Paris.

It's the classic story of star-crossed lovers. An American ex-pat artist is living in Paris when he meets a wealthy American who takes a liking to more than just his art. Unbeknownst to her, however, he has fallen in love with a local Parisian who is engaged to his friend. The story follows their romance as they try to resolve the confusion that ensues.

Why don't we make movies like this anymore? The music was absolutely amazing. The entire soundtrack is so beautiful. Anytime Gene opened his mouth heaven flowed out. He's so good! The dancing was also fantastic. Leslie Caron is such a gorgeous dancer. Leslie and Gene danced several times together and it was mesmerizing. So wonderful. Definitely put this one on your list. But maybe skip the dream sequences--they were kind of weird...

I love Jimmy Fallon. He's one of my favorite people. If I could go to lunch with him, I totally would...every day. I regularly watch his and it's a lifelong dream to be on it. One of my favorite segments is his lip sync battles with celebrities. (I kind of think my family should make a Christmas tradition...mostly because my brothers would be super good at it.)

One of these said battles was with Paul Rudd and it was amazing. Enjoy!
