Have you ever been somewhere that feels so unreal that you spend the entire length of your stay questioning its existence? That is Iceland distilled into one sentence. I found insanely cheap tickets a few months ago and a friend and I descended on the unsuspecting island last week.

After a red eye, we piled into our rental as the sun came up and headed along the Ring Road to the north side of the island to a town called Akureyri. Akureyri is this gorgeous little town with brightly colored buildings lining the roads and enough bakeries to keep even the most carb-obsessed tourists happy.

I never realized how often I did this until my travel buddy captured this shot a million times.

We stamped around town, indulged in perfectly made pastries, and then went in search of some of Iceland's natural wonders.

We had a loose plan of where we wanted to go, but mostly basked in the freedom of having our own car, pulling off whenever something captured our fancy. (Something that happened often.) Our wandering paid off rather quickly when we found Godafoss: a roaring waterfall tucked into the most unassuming valley.

A little more damp than when we had started, we popped back into the car and headed for our Airbnb, deliriously exhausted from a perfect day.
