One year ago today I was basking in the glory of an English summer. I can honestly say that those six weeks in Europe were some of the best of my whole life! I loved every single minute! I couldn't soak it up fast enough.

The two weeks at Oxford were just a dream. I was so filled intellectually. There's something incredible about sitting at the feet of the world's leading Tolkien scholar and talking about one of the greatest authors ever. Ever. I feel like my time at Oxford opened up a whole world to me as I learned about things I never knew existed.

Plus, England. You know.

My love of England is pretty well documented. I don't know what it is about that magical place, but I just adore it. So when the chance came to visit the British Embassy I jumped at it. It felt like I had taken the fastest jet to England and was tucked away in that beautiful country.

You when it's finals week and you should be spending hours slaving over your notes, but instead you find every possible reason not to? Welcome to my life. Instead, I'm making my dream Christmas wish list.

Last night I had a Skype date with one of my besties and our conversation turned to the joys of herbal tea. When the weather turns cold I love nothing more than curling up with a cuppa tea and reading a book.

In case you feel like you don't know enough about me, here's 50 more things!
I miss London. And England. I think it's the most perfect place in the world. Sometimes if I've been in one place for too I itching to travel again. If I could pack up and leave tomorrow, I'd head straight to England. I love it. I love the buildings, the teashops, the rolling green hills. I love that England still has stone walls to mark property lines and has high tea. I even love riding the Tube. I think it's super fun. And the busses is a whole different level of awesome. I love that the English sit in the parks during their lunch hour. I love riding bikes through London and feeling oh so posh. I love eating Indian food while I wander through Camden market and nibbling on pastries on Portobello Road. I love the British Monarchy and all the pomp and circumstance. I love the old stone cottages that dot the countryside and the old pubs that line the streets. I love the accents and how everything sounds infinitely more charming. Basically, I love everything about England and I'm just dying to go back.

(Photo dump!)

Two hundred years ago, Baltimore was the center of the world. Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner in Baltimore's harbor. I had no idea! I must have missed that day in 7th grade history... To commemorate the event, Baltimore pulled out all the stops. There were fireworks, the Blue Angels, and massive ships from all over the world. I've never seen anything like it!

I started the day at the British, because I love everything British :)

This movie looks absolutely amazing! Who doesn't love a star-crossed love story between a physics student and an art student that is further complicated by his traumatic disease?!

I have a Pinterest addiction. Sometimes I pretend that I don't, but I do and most days I'm ok with that. Pinterest now has a feature that collects all your 'interests' (aka obsessions) into one place so you don't have to sift through your feed. Very convenient and totally an enabler.

So this is my life according to Pinterest, which I'm not sure is super accurate:

Johnny Cash
This interest is a bit of a mystery to me. While I love Johnny, he does not frequent my pinning repertoire. Although Walk the Line is one of the greatest love songs in my opinion.

Eddie Redmayne
Yeah, I think he's so handsome and I would have dinner with him any night of the week. He got engaged while I was in London and I swear you could hear my heart breaking all the way back in the States.

London
Which brings me to London. My favorite city in the whole world. London recently got its own board (well, England did) and is the only place to have this honor bestowed upon it. Things are getting serious.

Chambray
I love chambray. It's a staple in my closet.  I like my chambray shirts paired with leggings, riding boots, and a chunky sweater.

Vintage China
Recently I have been obsessed with china. Maybe it's because I'm moving into my first 'real' house? Whatever it is, I am in love.

This is how Pinterest sees me :) This is only a sprinkling of my 'interests'. It's kind of funny to check it sometimes. It's like getting a glimpse of how your imaginary Internet friend sees you.

I miss England so much! I wish I could buy a ticket right now and catch the next plane out. But, alas, England is going to have to wait for a while. I did find these awesome maps though that are probably going to find a new home in my apartment which should tie my over until I can go back :)

My last night in London was one of the best of the whole trip. My travel companion had one thing that he wanted to do while in the UK, which was to see Les Miserables in the West End. At first we were told that that night's show was sold out, but we ran over to the theater and scored some of the last seats. So lucky, right?

Now, I am partial to the 2012 movie version (not at all because I have the largest crush on Eddie Redmayne or anything), so I was a bit nervous about my lofty expectations. While the show was very different from the move (to be expected) it was still amazing. Both of the women who played Fantine and Eponine were phenomenal. I mean, wow! They were just so good. Val Jean was great as well. Really, I was impressed with the whole cast. But this is the West End, so I should have known it was going to amazing :) I am sooo glad that we made time to catch a show. Les Mis was definitely the right choice. There's just something special about seeing a show where it first opened.

I wasn't able to take pictures or anything, so enjoy this clip from the movie, featuring Eddie Redmayne:

PS. I also visited the Churchill War Rooms, a definite must see if you're in London!

The day finally came! I packed for my European adventure today. It's a good thing I started a few days before I actually leave. I realized a few things that I still need to pick up and this will also give me time to unpack a few things I don't actually need :) It was a little tricky trying to pack for six weeks away; two of those weeks are strictly business casual/professional which made packing all the more joyous. Eventually, however, I think I finally got everything I needed and still have a little bit of room for souvenirs!

I am only taking one suitcase and a huge backpack. Here's my packing list:

Touring

  • 4 shirts
  • 2 skirts (one can double for Oxford)
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 1 sweater
  • 2 t-shirts
  • 1 pair of gym shorts
  • Tennis shoes
  • Walking shoes (ballet flats)

Oxford Wardrobe

  • 5 shirts
  • 2 pencil skirts
  • 1 pair of slacks
  • 1 blazer
  • 1 black belt
  • Heels

Other

  • 7 pair of underwear
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • Straightener
  • Make-up
  • Face wash
  • Shampoo/Conditioner/Body wash
  • Camera
  • 2 lenses
  • Extra batteries
  • 1 16gb memory card
  • Laptop and charger
  • Mini lint roller
  • Tide-to-Go pen
  • Journal

My trip across the pond is right around the corner and the excitement is just about killing me! You would have thought that the hours I spend pinning picture of Europe on Pinterest would have greatly decreased, but you'd be wrong. I am even more excited, if that's even possible. It is now time to start making phone calls to banks and embassies and buy all those last minute items. I really thought this day would never come, but then again I never thought graduation would come either--joke's on me :) As I count down the last few days I decided to make a list of things I want to 'accomplish' on my European adventure. Some are lame, but I don't mind; I'm in part giving in to my pop culture loving side which will explain several items on this list.

  1. Take a new profile picture
  2. Try at least one food item that I cannot pronounce/recognize in every city
  3. Have at least one conversation with a local in each city--something beyond "How do I get here?"
  4. Ask one bus driver/taxi driver what their favorite thing about their city is and go do that thing
  5. Have a Sabrina moment in Paris, aka find a bridge I like and write in my journal there
  6. Find, date, and marry Prince Harry
  7. Pretend to be Robert Langdon and exit the Louvre all stealth-like, but in a completely legal way
  8. Convince at least one person that I am full-time Oxford student studying early Russian art and its impact on climate control
  9. Find Hogwarts...and not the movie set
  10. Try on one obnoxiously overpriced clothing item in Paris or London
  11. Hang out in a theater until I meet Eddie Redmayne

I was reading another blog this morning when I stumbled on this video about different accents in Britain and Ireland. Just watching it makes me check my countdown to the day I leave! I forget that other countries have just as many different accents as the US does.

I try to read the news at least once a day. I'm partial to the BBC but I'm not picky. It probably has more to do with my love for the UK than anything else to be honest. I also read tons and tons of blogs. If there was a degree for blog stalking I would have a PhD. It's kind of a problem. I've found so great articles in the past fews and just wanted to share some. The content is pretty diverse, but this is a situation where it's ok to pick-and-choose. Enjoy!
